Today, let’s clarify two important concepts that are often confused: type of skin and skin condition. Although they seem similar at first glance, they are actually completely different.
Type of skin is what you are born with.
Skin type is genetically determined and typically remains with you throughout your life. It is determined by the number and activity of your sebaceous glands.
There are four main types of skin:
- Normal – smooth texture, small pores, natural glow without oily shine.
- Dry – thin, matte, sometimes rough, pores are almost invisible.
- Oily – dense, with enlarged pores and a characteristic oily shine throughout the day.
- Combination is the most common type, when different areas of the face have different types (for example, an oily T-zone and a normal or dry U-zone).
Over time, skin type remains relatively unchanged. What many perceive as a “change in skin type” is most often due to changes in the skin’s condition.
Skin condition is something that can be improved
Skin condition changes throughout life under the influence of age, hormones, nutrition, stress, climate and care.
Basic skin conditions:
- Dehydrated – a feeling of tightness, fine wrinkles, dullness.
- Sensitive – redness, itching, irritation, reaction to many products.
- Problematic – rashes, inflammation, comedones, acne.
- Pigmented – pigment and age spots, uneven tone.
- Stressed – dull, gray, tired, lost elasticity.
- Aging – decreased elasticity, wrinkles, loss of skin density.
It is the condition of the skin that we can significantly improve with the help of proper care.
